Ten poems that have shaped the language, the culture, and the way people express grief, love, time, and mortality. Each one is short enough to read in five minutes and worth reading more than once. The note with each explains what makes it remarkable and what to pay attention to.

If— by Rudyard Kipling (1910)The most anthologised poem in the English language. A father's instructions to a son for how to be a person of integrity under pressure. Its ABAB rhyme scheme is almost hypnotically even — read it aloud to hear what it does.
The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost (1916)Almost universally misread as a poem about individualism. It isn't — the speaker admits both roads 'had worn them really about the same.' It's a poem about the stories we tell ourselves in retrospect about our choices.

Ten paintings that genuinely change when you stand in front of them — where the scale, the texture of the paint, or the presence of the original works in a way no reproduction can capture. Each entry includes the museum, what to look for, and why it's worth going.

The Starry Night — Van Gogh (1889), MoMA, New YorkReproduced so often it has lost its impact in print. In person the impasto texture is extraordinary — the paint builds up several centimetres from the canvas, and the swirling motion reads as almost three-dimensional.
Las Meninas — Velázquez (1656), Museo del Prado, MadridOne of the most analysed paintings in Western art. The king and queen appear only as reflections in a mirror; the painter himself is in the canvas looking out at us. Foucault wrote extensively on its collapse of the normal subject-viewer relationship.
The Birth of Venus — Botticelli (c.1484–86), Uffizi Gallery, FlorenceMonumental in scale in person (172 × 278 cm). The delicacy of the line rewards close looking — Venus is deliberately not ideally proportioned, which is part of the point.

Water Lilies series — Monet (1896–1926), Musée de l'Orangerie, ParisThe two oval rooms at the Orangerie were designed by Monet himself as an immersive environment. You step inside the paintings. Nothing else in Paris produces this experience.
The Last Supper — Leonardo da Vinci (1495–98), Santa Maria delle Grazie, MilanAccess is restricted to 15 minutes and must be booked months in advance. The perspective lines in the ceiling all converge at Christ's right eye. The deterioration is significant, but its presence remains extraordinary.

Michelangelo painted lying on scaffolding. The detail visible when craning your neck is humbling compared to what you can see in photographs.

Tokyo Story (1953, Yasujirō Ozu)Elderly parents visit their adult children in Tokyo and find themselves quietly in the way. Ozu's stationary camera style is unlike anyone else's.
Wild Strawberries (1957, Ingmar Bergman)An old professor drives to receive an honorary degree and reviews his life. The most accessible entry point into Bergman.
