Before the Appointment

Screenings by Age (UK NHS Guidelines)

A weekly self-reflection to notice how you're actually doing — not how you're supposed to be doing. Sit with this for 10–15 minutes at the end of the week. There are no right answers.

Emotional Check-In

How am I actually feeling this week — not the answer I'd give if someone asked at work, but the honest one?Name it as precisely as possible: not just 'fine' or 'stressed', but anxious, overwhelmed, numb, quietly content, restless, sad, surprisingly good.
Has this feeling been here most of the week, or did it arrive and leave? What seems to bring it or push it away?
What was the hardest moment of the week, emotionally? What triggered it — and was my reaction proportionate, or larger than the situation warranted?

The Basics (These Affect Everything Else)

Sleep: how many hours on average this week, and how was the quality?Sleep is the single most powerful lever for mental health — if it's consistently poor, this is the first thing worth addressing
Movement: did I move my body in some way most days?Not 'did I exercise' — even a 20-minute walk counts and has a measurable effect on mood and anxiety
Eating: did I eat regularly and reasonably?Skipping meals or eating very little creates or worsens low mood and anxiety through blood sugar effects alone
Alcohol: how much did I drink this week?Alcohol is a depressant — its short-term numbing effect is real, but the rebound anxiety and low mood the following day are equally real. Honest accounting matters here.
Social connection: did I spend real time with someone I feel safe with?Phone calls count. Brief human contact counts. Isolation makes everything harder to carry.

Stress & Thinking Patterns

What was I most worried about this week? Write it out.Unexamined worries feel larger in the head than they do on paper.
Was there anything I was catastrophising — imagining the worst-case outcome as if it were likely? What is the more realistic range of outcomes?
Was there anything I was avoiding that made the anxiety around it grow?Avoidance relieves anxiety in the short term and increases it in the medium term.
Did I hold onto anything from earlier in the week that I could have let go?Rumination (replaying events repeatedly) is a significant contributor to low mood — noticing it is the first step.
What was in my control this week, and what wasn't? How much energy did I spend on things that weren't?

Connection & Meaning

Did I do anything this week that felt meaningful or engaged my attention fully? Even briefly.
Did I help anyone, or did someone help me? Both matter for wellbeing.
Is there anything I've been putting off saying to someone — an apology, a thank you, checking in on someone who has been on my mind?
Am I making time for things that used to matter to me — hobbies, interests, relationships — or have they quietly disappeared?If they've disappeared, is that a choice or is it drift?

Looking Ahead

One thing I want to do differently next week — specific and smallNot a resolution; an intention.

Before the Cycle Begins

The IVF Cycle — Stage by Stage

The Two-Week Wait

Postpartum care checklist

A practical guide to the weeks after birth — physical recovery, emotional wellbeing, newborn care and when to ask for help. For informational purposes only; always follow the guidance of your midwife, GP and health visitor.

Physical Recovery — The First Two Weeks

Lochia (postpartum bleeding) is normal and can last up to 6 weeks — it should gradually lighten from red to pink to yellow-whiteIf it becomes suddenly heavier, clots larger than a golf ball appear, or it smells offensive, contact your midwife the same day
Perineal healing (after vaginal birth): keep the area clean and dry, use a peri bottle after every toilet visit, change maternity pads frequently. Salt baths help.Pain that worsens after day 3, signs of infection (heat, swelling, smell) or wound breakdown should be reported immediately
C-section wound care: keep the incision clean and dry, wear loose clothing, avoid lifting anything heavier than your baby for the first 6 weeksWatch for signs of infection: redness, heat, discharge, increasing pain or fever

Feeding

Breastfeeding difficulties in the first week are extremely common — they do not mean you can't breastfeedA poor latch causes nipple pain and poor milk transfer; a breastfeeding counsellor or lactation consultant can usually resolve this quickly. Ask your midwife or health visitor for a referral.
Breastfeeding support resources: La Leche League, the National Breastfeeding Helpline (0300 100 0212), and Association of Breastfeeding MothersAll free, all staffed by people who have done this
If formula feeding: ready-made liquid formula is safest for newborns and worth having for the first few weeks even if you plan to use powderIt requires no mixing. Sterilise bottles and teats until at least 12 months.

Feeding

10 things to do before turning 30

Travel somewhere genuinely unfamiliar aloneNot a group tour, not visiting a friend — arriving somewhere new by yourself and having to navigate it. The discomfort of the first day and the confidence of the third are both formative in ways that shared travel isn't.
Work a job you find difficult or unglamorousWaiting tables, retail, manual work, customer service. Not as a character-building exercise, but because understanding what physical or emotionally demanding work actually feels like makes you a more grounded person for the rest of your career.
Build one genuine skill that has nothing to do with your careerAn instrument, a language, a craft, a sport. Not to be good at it necessarily — to know what sustained, effortful learning feels like outside of an institutional setting.

Have one honest conversation with a parent or guardian about their lifeNot your childhood, their life — what they wanted, what they sacrificed, what they regret. Most people do this too late, if at all.
Spend at least one extended period without a relationshipNot as a rule, but as an experience. Knowing what you're like when you're not adapting to another person — what you enjoy, how you fill time, what you want — is knowledge you can only get this way.
