The First Weeks at Home

Contact your midwife, not A&E, for postnatal concernsConcerns about feeding, minor wound questions, normal postnatal symptoms. A&E is for emergencies; your midwife is for everything else in the first 10–28 days.

Are you ready for children?

A set of honest questions to sit with before making one of the largest decisions of your life — not a test with a passing score, but a space for reflection. Nobody is fully ready. The question is whether your foundation is solid enough.

Your Relationship

Are you and your partner genuinely on the same page about wanting children, and about roughly when?'We'll figure it out' is a very common answer that conceals significant divergence. If you haven't had a direct, specific conversation about this, that conversation comes first.
Is your relationship stable and honest enough to survive what parenthood adds to it?Early parenthood involves sleep deprivation, reduced intimacy, financial stress, reduced time for each other and a significant redistribution of labour. It doesn't fix a shaky relationship; it reveals and magnifies what's already there.
Have you talked specifically about how you would divide childcare?And how you would handle it if one of you carries significantly more of the burden? This conversation is easier before the baby arrives than after.

Practical Realities

Do you understand what the first year actually involves?Not the idealised version, but: sleep deprivation that may exceed anything you've experienced, a complete restructuring of daily life, reduced spontaneity for several years, and the permanent alteration of who you are and what your time belongs to.
What does your financial picture look like?Not 'are you rich enough' (almost no one feels financially ready) but: is there a basic stability, an understanding of what childcare costs, what maternity and paternity pay you're entitled to, and how the household finances change on reduced income.
Do you have a support network who can practically help?The research on parental wellbeing consistently shows that social support is one of the strongest protective factors. Raising a child in isolation is significantly harder than raising one with people around you.

Your Own Readiness

Why do you want children?Is it because it is genuinely what you want, or because of external pressure, expected timelines, a fear of regret or a desire to solve something else? None of these make someone a bad parent, but being honest with yourself about the motivation is worth doing.
How is your mental health?Not as a disqualifier, but as context. Parenthood is demanding. If there are significant unresolved mental health challenges, addressing them before having a child (where possible) is in the best interest of you and the child.
Are you able to put someone else's needs consistently ahead of your own for years at a time?This isn't sainthood — it's a realistic description of what early parenthood requires. It doesn't mean your needs stop mattering; it means they are frequently secondary.
Have you genuinely considered not having children as a valid option?The assumption that parenthood is the default and childlessness requires justification is worth examining. Both are legitimate paths — the decision should come from choice, not assumption.

On Readiness Itself

There is no version of 'ready' that means all conditions are perfectWaiting for perfect financial security, perfect relationship stability, the perfect moment — these conditions rarely arrive. The question is whether you have a sufficient foundation: a stable relationship, basic financial security, your own wellbeing reasonably managed, and a genuine desire to do this.
Some uncertainty is not unreadiness — it is honestyThe things you cannot fully prepare for — the love, the exhaustion, the way your sense of yourself shifts, the specific texture of raising this particular child — can only be learned by doing it.
People who find parenthood deeply meaningful almost universally report that it was harder than they expectedPeople who struggle are more likely to have gone in underprepared or under-supported than to have been the wrong kind of person to be a parent.

Retirement planning

A practical guide to planning for retirement in the UK — state pension, workplace pensions, additional saving and the questions worth answering at every stage of your working life. Not financial advice; consult a qualified financial adviser for your specific circumstances.

Check Where You Stand

Get a State Pension forecast at gov.uk/check-state-pensionIt shows your current NI record, how many qualifying years you have, and your projected state pension. Do this now regardless of your age; the information is useful at 30 as much as at 55.
Locate all your pension potsThe average person in the UK has 11 jobs over their working life and leaves pension pots behind at each one. Use the government's Pension Tracing Service (gov.uk/find-pension-contact-details) to find any you've lost track of.
Find out the current value and projected income of your workplace pensionYour pension provider or HR team can tell you this. Understanding what you're on track to receive is the starting point for any planning.
Calculate your target retirement incomeNot just 'enough to live on' but what lifestyle you want, where you want to live, what you want to do. Most financial planners use 50–70% of pre-retirement income as a starting estimate, but your number is personal.

State Pension

The full new State Pension (2024-25) is £221.20 per weekYou need 35 qualifying National Insurance years to receive the full amount. You need at least 10 years for any payment.
State Pension age is currently 66, rising to 67 between 2026 and 2028Proposals to raise it to 68 in the mid-2040s are under review — check gov.uk for current timelines.
Fill NI gaps if you have themYou can pay voluntary Class 3 NI contributions to fill gaps in your record. A qualifying year currently costs around £824 and adds approximately £300 per year to your State Pension for life — usually an excellent return.
Check eligibility for National Insurance creditsPeriods of unemployment (if claiming JSA), childcare (Child Benefit claim in your name), or illness may have given you credits you haven't checked.
The State Pension is not means-testedIt is not affected by other pension income or savings.

Workplace Pension

Auto-enrolment contributions are a minimum, not a targetThe legal minimum is 8% of qualifying earnings (3% employer, 5% employee). For most people, this will not be sufficient on its own for a comfortable retirement.
Increase your contributions if you canEven an extra 1–2% makes a significant difference compounded over decades. Some employers match additional contributions — ask whether yours does before contributing to separate savings.
Understand your pension typeDefined contribution (DC) pensions grow based on investment performance — most modern workplace pensions are this type. Defined benefit (DB) or final salary pensions are rarer, more valuable and worth protecting if you have one.
Check the investment funds your DC pension is invested inThe default fund is not always the most suitable for your age and timeline. Most providers offer a lifestyle profile that automatically de-risks as you approach retirement.
Annual allowance: up to £60,000 per year tax-free (2024-25)Including employer contributions. For most employees this is not a practical limit, but it matters for high earners and the self-employed.

Additional Saving & Investing

ISA allowance: £20,000 per year completely tax-freeA Stocks and Shares ISA is appropriate for money you won't need for at least 5 years; a Cash ISA for accessible savings.
SIPP (Self-Invested Personal Pension)For the self-employed, or for those who want more control over their pension investments. Basic rate tax relief is added automatically on contributions — a £800 contribution becomes £1,000 in the pension.
Lifetime ISA (LISA)If you're under 40, a LISA offers a 25% government bonus on up to £4,000 per year, but it is restricted to house purchase or retirement — cannot access before 60 without a 25% penalty that exceeds the bonus.
Consider downsizing the propertyFor many UK homeowners, equity in the family home is the largest single asset. Downsizing in retirement releases capital and reduces ongoing costs.
Diversify across pension typesPensions, ISAs, property and other savings serve different purposes and have different tax treatments. Concentrating everything in one vehicle (particularly property) creates concentration risk.

Lifestyle & Timing

Define what retirement means for youFor most people under 50 today, a hard stop at a set age is less likely than a gradual transition: reduced hours, freelance work, portfolio income. Plan for flexibility rather than a cliff edge.
Healthcare costs rise significantly in retirementPrivate health insurance, dental treatment, and care in later life are costs worth building into projections. The NHS covers most needs, but there are increasing costs beyond it.
Inheritance and estate planningA will, appropriate life insurance, lasting power of attorney for health and finances, and understanding inheritance tax thresholds are all part of retirement planning — not a separate topic.
Consider sequence of returns riskDrawing down a pension during a market downturn in the early years of retirement has a disproportionate impact on the longevity of funds. A cash buffer of 1–2 years of expenses allows you to avoid selling investments at a low.

When to Take Professional Advice

Consult a regulated independent financial adviser (IFA) at major decision pointsWhen consolidating multiple pensions, approaching retirement age, deciding how to draw down your pension, or when estate planning becomes complex.

A trimester-by-trimester guide to antenatal appointments, tests, supplements and practical milestones — for informational purposes only. Always follow the specific guidance of your midwife and obstetric team.

As Soon as You Know

Start taking folic acid 400mcg daily immediatelyIt reduces the risk of neural tube defects. If you have certain risk factors (BMI over 30, diabetes, epilepsy, previous pregnancy affected by neural tube defect), you need 5mg — ask your GP.
Take vitamin D 10mcg (400 IU) daily throughout pregnancyRecommended for all pregnant women in the UK.
Stop alcohol immediatelyThere is no established safe level during pregnancy.
Stop smokingNHS Stop Smoking support is free and effective. Let your midwife know so they can refer you.
Contact your GP to arrange your midwife booking appointmentThis typically takes place at 8–10 weeks and is the longest antenatal appointment you'll have.
Check any medication you currently take with your GPSome medications are not safe in pregnancy and may need to be changed.

First Trimester (Weeks 1–12)

Booking appointment (weeks 8–10)A thorough health and history review. Bring: photo ID, your GP details, details of any current medications, family medical history. Blood pressure, weight and urine will be taken.
Blood tests at bookingBlood group and rhesus factor (important for later), full blood count, HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis screening, rubella immunity.
Nuchal translucency scan and combined screening (weeks 11–14)Screens for Down's syndrome, Edwards' syndrome and Patau's syndrome. This is a choice, not a requirement — you will be offered it and you can decline.
Know what to avoid during pregnancyRaw or undercooked meat and fish, unpasteurised dairy products, pâté, high-mercury fish (shark, swordfish, marlin), more than 2 portions of oily fish per week, raw eggs, liver and liver products (high vitamin A), excessive caffeine (keep under 200mg/day).
Morning sicknessPeaks weeks 6–9 and typically improves by week 12–14. Small frequent meals, ginger, crackers and staying hydrated help. If you cannot keep anything down (hyperemesis gravidarum), seek medical help — it requires treatment.
Fatigue in the first trimester is profound and normalRest when possible and reduce non-essential commitments.
Tell your employer when you feel readyYou are legally protected from pregnancy discrimination from the moment you tell them, not from a specific week.

Second Trimester (Weeks 13–26)

Anomaly scan / 20-week scanA detailed scan of the baby's anatomy. Checks for structural abnormalities in major organs and measures growth. If anything is found, a specialist referral is offered.
Antenatal appointments continueTypically at 16 and 25 weeks for first-time mothers — blood pressure, urine and baby's position are checked at each.
Gestational diabetes screening (OGTT) at weeks 24–28Offered if you have risk factors: BMI over 30, previous gestational diabetes, family history of Type 2 diabetes, previous large baby (over 4.5kg).
Anti-D injection if you are rhesus negativeOffered at around 28 weeks to prevent rhesus sensitisation.
MATB1 certificateYour midwife will provide this after 20 weeks. You need it to claim Statutory Maternity Pay or Maternity Allowance — give it to your employer.
Notify your employer of your maternity leave start dateLegally required by 15 weeks before your due date.
Make the most of the second trimesterThis is typically when energy returns — a good time to attend antenatal classes, do any travel you're planning and prepare the nursery.

Third Trimester (Weeks 27–40)

Antenatal appointments increase in frequencyTypically at 28, 31, 34, 36, 38, 40 and 41 weeks for first-time mothers.
Group B Streptococcus (GBS)Not routinely screened for in the NHS but can be tested privately. GBS is carried by around 20% of women and can cause serious illness in newborns if passed on during birth. Discuss with your midwife.
Whooping cough vaccineOffered between weeks 16–32, ideally before 32 weeks — protects the baby before they can be vaccinated themselves. Flu vaccine if pregnant during flu season.
Begin preparing your birth preferencesNot a rigid plan but a considered note of your preferences regarding pain relief, monitoring, intervention, cord clamping and skin-to-skin. Share with your birth partner and bring to hospital.
Pack your hospital bag from week 36Pack both your bag and the baby's bag together (see the Baby Arrival Preparation checklist).
Back and pelvic girdle pain in the third trimesterAffects a majority of pregnant women — refer yourself to physiotherapy early; it's effective and available on the NHS.
Monitor foetal movementsYou should feel regular movement every day from around 24 weeks. If you notice a reduction in movement or a change in pattern, contact your maternity unit immediately — do not wait until your next appointment.
From week 41: overdue discussionsMost trusts offer membrane sweep at 40–41 weeks and induction at 41–42 weeks. You can accept or decline induction — discuss the evidence and your options fully with your midwife or consultant.

Throughout Pregnancy

Keep all antenatal appointmentsEven the ones that feel routine — most complications are detected by the observations taken at these appointments.
Mental health during pregnancyAntenatal anxiety and depression are as common as postnatal versions and less well-recognised. Tell your midwife if you're struggling — they should ask at every appointment, but you can raise it first.
Exercise is safe and beneficial throughout pregnancySwimming, walking and pregnancy yoga are all suitable. Avoid contact sports and any activity with a fall risk as your balance shifts.
Dental treatment is free on the NHS during pregnancyAnd for a year after. Pregnancy hormones affect gum health — attend a check-up.
Sleep on your side from 28 weeksSleeping on your back in late pregnancy compresses a major blood vessel. Left side is recommended; right side is also fine. Don't panic if you wake on your back — just roll over.

New puppy & first pet checklist

A practical checklist for bringing home a puppy — what to buy, what to register, how to set up the first weeks, and the training and socialisation that prevents most of the problems people complain about later.

Before They Come Home

Choose a reputable breeder or rescueA reputable breeder will health-test their breeding dogs, let you visit before purchase, give you the puppy's vaccination records and won't let the puppy leave before 8 weeks. Red flags: selling without viewing, puppies available immediately, no health test evidence.
Register with a vet before collection dayBook a check-up within the first few days of arrival.
Buy pet insurance before collectionMost insurers will not cover pre-existing conditions, so getting cover on day one protects against anything discovered at the first vet appointment. Lifetime cover is significantly better than annual maximum or per-condition policies for long-term conditions.
Puppy-proof the homeSecure cables and wires (chewing hazards), block off stairs initially, remove toxic plants (lilies, azalea, poinsettia, daffodil bulbs — look up a full list), store cleaning products and medications out of reach.
Set up a puppy areaA gated zone or pen where the puppy can be safely contained when unsupervised. Not a permanent solution, but essential initially.
Decide on sleeping arrangements before they arriveThe first night will be difficult regardless, but inconsistency (bedroom tonight, kitchen tomorrow) makes settling harder.

Essential Supplies

Collar, ID tag and leadAn ID tag is legally required in public spaces in the UK — must show your name and address.
HarnessMany trainers prefer a harness over collar-only for walks, especially with puppies who pull.
CrateA correctly sized crate (dog should be able to stand, turn around and lie down) used positively becomes a safe retreat, not a punishment. Cover three sides with a blanket to make it den-like.
Dog bed or mattress
Food and water bowlsCeramic or stainless steel are easier to clean than plastic.
Age-appropriate puppy foodContinue with whatever the breeder or rescue was feeding initially. If you want to switch, do it slowly over 7–10 days to prevent digestive upset.
Puppy pads if indoor toilet training initially
ToysChew toys (Kong, Nylabone), tug toys, soft toys — variety is important. A frozen Kong stuffed with wet food is useful for crate introduction and distraction.
Poo bagsYou will use more than you think.
Grooming tools appropriate to your breedBrush, nail clippers, shampoo.

Vet, Health & Legal

First vet check-up within 48–72 hours of arrivalFull physical examination — discuss vaccination schedule, worming and flea treatment.

It doesn't fix a shaky relationship; it reveals and magnifies what's already there.

Practical Realities

Do you understand what the first year actually involves?Not the idealised version, but: sleep deprivation that may exceed anything you've experienced, a complete restructuring of daily life, reduced spontaneity for several years, and the permanent alteration of who you are and what your time belongs to.

Vaccination schedule (UK)Typically first vaccine at 8–10 weeks, second at 10–12 weeks. Puppy is not fully protected until 1–2 weeks after the second vaccine. Keep them away from unvaccinated dogs and contaminated ground until then.
MicrochippingLegally required for all dogs in England, Wales and Scotland. If from a reputable breeder, the puppy should arrive chipped. Transfer the microchip registration to your name and address immediately.

Worming and flea treatmentYour vet will recommend a schedule. Puppies need more frequent worming than adults initially.

The First Weeks

The first night: whining and distress is normalA warm water bottle (not hot, wrapped in a blanket) and a ticking clock near the crate mimics the warmth and heartbeat of littermates. Don't let them cry for hours, but don't immediately reward every cry with attention — gradually increase the time before responding.
Toilet trainingTake them outside immediately after every nap, meal, drink and play session. Reward immediately when they go outside. Accidents indoors are normal — clean with an enzyme cleaner to remove scent markers; bleach-based cleaners preserve the smell and encourage them to return to the same spot.
Socialisation window closes at around 12–16 weeksPositive exposure to as many people, sounds, environments, animals and surfaces as possible during this window produces a well-adjusted adult dog. Carry them before vaccinations are complete if necessary — the socialisation risk of isolation is higher than the disease risk for most puppies.
Puppy biting: all puppies biteIt is how they explore and play. Redirect to toys immediately rather than your hands. Yelping and withdrawing attention when bitten communicates that it ends play. Never use your hands as toys.
Puppies sleep 16–20 hours a day — this is normalDon't over-exercise them — too much activity too young damages developing joints.

Training Basics

Start training from day one'He's just a puppy' is the reasoning behind most adult dog behaviour problems. Sit, stay, come and leave it are the four commands worth establishing first.
Positive reinforcement onlyReward the behaviour you want immediately and consistently. Punishment-based training suppresses behaviour without teaching an alternative and damages trust.
Keep sessions shortPuppies concentrate for 2–5 minutes. Four 5-minute sessions a day is far more effective than one 30-minute session.
Enrol in a puppy classThe primary benefit is not the commands (you can teach those at home) but the socialisation with other puppies and people in a controlled environment. Choose a class that uses positive reinforcement.
The recall is the most important command you will ever teachIt could save your dog's life. Invest significant time in making 'come' the most reliable and rewarding command in their vocabulary.

10 things to do before turning 30

Live alone for at least one sustained periodNot a gap year, an actual stint of independent living — your own place, your own bills, your own silence. It teaches you more about who you are and what you need than almost any other experience, and it is significantly harder to arrange after 30.
Travel somewhere genuinely unfamiliar aloneNot a group tour, not visiting a friend — arriving somewhere new by yourself and having to navigate it. The discomfort of the first day and the confidence of the third are both formative in ways that shared travel isn't.
