Write clearlyNot 'communicate well' — write clearly. The ability to make a complex idea brief and precise, structure an argument so it persuades rather than irritates, and produce emails that get a response: these compound over a career in ways almost no other skill does. Almost nobody actively develops this. Read: 'On Writing Well' by William Zinsser. Practice: write something of substance every week.
How to have difficult conversationsRaising a problem with someone you work with or live with without it becoming an attack, separating the behaviour from the person, listening during disagreement rather than reloading your argument. The framework in 'Crucial Conversations' by Patterson et al. is worth learning. Most relationship and professional deterioration is traceable to difficult conversations that nobody had.
How to give and receive feedbackHonest feedback delivered well is one of the most valuable gifts one professional can give another, and almost nobody does it well. Receiving feedback without becoming defensive — sitting with the discomfort of hearing what you could do better — is even harder and more valuable. This is learnable with practice and specific techniques.

Practical Life Skills

First aid: CPR and AED useCardiac arrest survival rates double when CPR is started within 5 minutes. An AED (defibrillator) is available in most public spaces and almost nobody knows how to use one. A 4-hour first aid course teaches both. This is the one skill on this list that might literally save a life — and most people never take the course.
Cook ten real meals from memoryNot recipes you need a phone to follow — meals you can make without thinking: a roast, a pasta sauce, a curry, a stir-fry, a soup, eggs five ways. You eat better, spend less, have more independence and become a more attractive person to live with.
Touch typeIf you spend 4+ hours a day on a keyboard, the difference between 40wpm (two-finger hunting) and 80wpm (touch typing) is roughly 2 hours of cognitive effort a day. Learnable in 3–4 months of 20-minute daily practice using Keybr or typing.com. Most people know this is worth doing and have never started.

Personal finance basicsHow to make a budget that reflects reality, how compound interest works (savings tool and debt trap), what a pension is and why starting at 22 vs 32 makes a difference of tens of thousands of pounds, how credit scores work. None of this is taught in school. All of it is learnable in a weekend.
How to negotiateSalary, contract terms, prices for large purchases, disputes with service providers. Most people avoid negotiation because it feels confrontational; it isn't — it's a conversation with a structure. Key tools: anchoring (whoever states a number first shapes the range), BATNA (your leverage), and silence. 'Never Split the Difference' by Chris Voss is the best starting point.
How to read a financial statementA profit and loss account (what came in, what went out), a balance sheet (what a business owns vs. what it owes), a cash flow statement (where the money actually went). You need to understand whether a company you might work for, run or invest in is financially healthy. An afternoon and a good YouTube explanation covers the basics.

How to Learn

How to learn efficientlyThe research is clear: spaced repetition (revisiting material at increasing intervals), active recall (testing yourself rather than re-reading), and interleaving (mixing subjects rather than blocking them) produce dramatically better retention than the methods most people use. Understanding why cramming doesn't work — and what to do instead — multiplies the value of every other skill you acquire.

Study Methods That Actually Work

Past papers under timed conditions: the single most effective revision activity for most examsDon't just read through them; sit down with a timer and write full answers. Then mark yourself against the mark scheme honestly.
The Feynman technique: pick a concept and explain it from scratch as if teaching someone with no backgroundEvery gap in your explanation is a gap in your understanding
Stop re-reading your notes and highlightingThese feel productive and have very weak evidence behind them. They produce a sense of familiarity easily confused with understanding. Use your notes to check what you've recalled, not as the primary study activity.

1–2 Weeks Before

During the Exam

Allocate your time by marksDivide the total time by the total marks to find the time per mark, then allocate accordingly. A 10-mark question should take roughly twice as long as a 5-mark question.

Show your working in maths and scienceYou can receive partial credit for a correct method even if the final answer is wrong. A blank answer scores zero regardless.

The Principles (Read Once)

Consistency beats intensity20 minutes every day produces dramatically more progress than 3 hours on Sunday. The brain builds language through repeated small encounters, not long sessions.
Input before output: prioritise listening and reading firstYou can only speak and write what you have first encountered. Beginners who try to speak before building comprehension frustrate themselves.
Comprehensible input: consume material that is roughly 70–80% understandableToo easy and you don't learn; too hard and you learn nothing. Find the level where you can follow the meaning but are being stretched.

10 things to do before turning 30

Not a checklist of achievements to measure yourself against — a set of experiences and habits worth building before 30 because they are substantially easier, or more formative, at this stage of life than later. Some are adventures; some are internal work. All of them compound.

Live alone for at least one sustained periodNot a gap year, an actual stint of independent living — your own place, your own bills, your own silence. It teaches you more about who you are and what you need than almost any other experience, and it is significantly harder to arrange after 30.
Travel somewhere genuinely unfamiliar aloneNot a group tour, not visiting a friend — arriving somewhere new by yourself and having to navigate it. The discomfort of the first day and the confidence of the third are both formative in ways that shared travel isn't.
Work a job you find difficult or unglamorousWaiting tables, retail, manual work, customer service. Not as a character-building exercise, but because understanding what physical or emotionally demanding work actually feels like makes you a more grounded person for the rest of your career.
Build one genuine skill that has nothing to do with your careerAn instrument, a language, a craft, a sport. Not to be good at it necessarily — to know what sustained, effortful learning feels like outside of an institutional setting.
