Week 1 — Clothing & Wardrobe

Day 1 — Empty the wardrobe entirely onto the bed. Every item.The point is to see everything you own at once, which is harder to do when it's hanging in the dark.
Day 2 — Sort tops: T-shirts, shirts, blousesThe rule that actually works: if you wouldn't buy it today knowing what you know about what you wear, it goes.

Day 9 — Clear the freezerFrozen food has a shelf life people routinely ignore. Ice-glazed items that have been in there since last winter get discarded.
Day 10 — Pantry and dry goodsExpired spices (most lose their potency after a year), duplicate jars, things bought for one recipe and never used again.
Day 11 — Small appliances and kitchen gadgetsThe smoothie maker used twice, the waffle iron from four Christmases ago, the ice cream maker still in its box — if it hasn't been out this year, consider hard.
Day 12 — Crockery, mugs, glassesMost households have more mugs than people. Keep what gets used; discard or donate the rest.
Day 13 — Tupperware and food storage containersMatch lids to bases. Anything without a matching pair goes. The drawer of mismatched lids is a near-universal problem.
Day 14 — Kitchen drawers: the junk drawer specificallyEverything out. Discard dead batteries, dried-up pens, mystery keys, takeaway menus from 2019. Keep only what has a purpose.

Week 3 — Living Spaces & Bathroom

Day 15 — Books. A proper sort, not a glance.The question isn't whether you love books; it's whether you will read this one again. Books you've read and won't reread do more good in a charity shop.
Day 16 — DVDs, CDs, games, and any other physical mediaIf everything you want is on a streaming service, the physical copies are taking up space for nostalgia.
Day 17 — Paperwork: the pile on the desk or in the drawerSort into: keep permanently (contracts, certificates, medical records), keep for now (recent bills, warranties), shred and discard (old bank statements, expired documents).
Day 18 — Living room surfaces and decorative objectsPick up every object and decide intentionally whether it earns its place.
Day 19 — Bathroom cabinet and toiletriesExpired medicines (take to a pharmacy for safe disposal). Duplicate products, half-used things you've bought replacements for, samples collected from hotels.

Week 4 — Storage, Digital & Letting Go

Day 22 — Loft, under-bed storage, or any long-term storage spaceThis is where things go to be forgotten. Be especially sceptical of boxes that haven't been opened in more than two years.
Day 23 — Garage, shed or outdoor storageBroken tools, half-empty tins of old paint, garden equipment from a house with a bigger garden.
Day 24 — Phone photosDelete obvious duplicates, blurry images, screenshots you no longer need. Back up what you want to keep to a cloud service or a drive.
Day 25 — Email inbox and digital filesUnsubscribe from mailing lists you don't read. Delete files that have no purpose. Empty the downloads folder.
Day 26 — Cables, chargers and tech accessoriesThe box of unidentified cables — if you can't identify what device a cable belongs to and you haven't needed it this year, it goes.
Day 27 — The sentimental pileCards, gifts you feel guilty about parting with, things belonging to people you've lost. This day is allowed to be slow. Keeping some things for feeling is legitimate; keeping everything is avoidance.
Day 28 — Decide the destination of everything you've discarded: charity shop, marketplace sale, recycling, skipDon't let the bags sit in the hallway — this is the step that makes the month count.
Day 29 — Organise what remainsOnce you've cleared the excess, organise what's left: grouping things by use, finding a permanent home for things that were previously homeless.
Day 30 — Set a rule to prevent re-accumulationThe one-in-one-out rule (buy something new, remove something old) is the simplest. The goal isn't to live minimally; it's to stop the slow drift back to where you started.

10 things to do before turning 30

Not a checklist of achievements to measure yourself against — a set of experiences and habits worth building before 30 because they are substantially easier, or more formative, at this stage of life than later. Some are adventures; some are internal work. All of them compound.

Live alone for at least one sustained periodNot a gap year, an actual stint of independent living — your own place, your own bills, your own silence. It teaches you more about who you are and what you need than almost any other experience, and it is significantly harder to arrange after 30.
Travel somewhere genuinely unfamiliar aloneNot a group tour, not visiting a friend — arriving somewhere new by yourself and having to navigate it. The discomfort of the first day and the confidence of the third are both formative in ways that shared travel isn't.
Work a job you find difficult or unglamorousWaiting tables, retail, manual work, customer service. Not as a character-building exercise, but because understanding what physical or emotionally demanding work actually feels like makes you a more grounded person for the rest of your career.
Build one genuine skill that has nothing to do with your careerAn instrument, a language, a craft, a sport. Not to be good at it necessarily — to know what sustained, effortful learning feels like outside of an institutional setting.
Have at least one relationship that challenges your assumptions about yourselfA friendship, a romantic relationship, or a working relationship with someone whose background, values, or experience is significantly different from your own. The version of yourself that emerges from it is more complete.
Get financially literate before 30, not afterUnderstand how a pension works and start one if you haven't, even at a minimal level. Compound interest over a 40-year career is one of the few financial facts that genuinely rewards early action.
Have one honest conversation with a parent or guardian about their lifeNot your childhood, their life — what they wanted, what they sacrificed, what they regret. Most people do this too late, if at all.
Spend at least one extended period without a relationshipNot as a rule, but as an experience. Knowing what you're like when you're not adapting to another person — what you enjoy, how you fill time, what you want — is knowledge you can only get this way.
Identify what you actually believe versus what you inheritedAbout work, money, relationships, success, bodies, ambition. Most of our assumptions arrive pre-installed. Your 20s are the period when you have enough independence to examine them but enough flexibility to change them.
Do something that frightens you in a healthy way at least once a yearA difficult conversation, a public performance, a physical challenge, an application you're not sure you're qualified for. The habit of moving towards fear rather than away from it is one of the most useful ones you can build early.
